Decided to change my original rear shock absorbers because one’s leaking. Easy I thought, only three bolts per side :D

After applying Plus Gas, one mounting stud turned a bit too easily, undid a little way but now won’t tighten or loosen, just keeps turning! I’m assuming there’s a not-so-captive nut behind the panel.

Anyone had this problem before? Can it be fixed or will I have to go to Stratford in my ’91 vintage Micra? (Oooh, you don’t see many of those about, my nan had one of them!)

Even Ford special tool number one won’t get me out of this one!

      Any suggestions welcome.

Assuming your’re on about an anglia and not the Micra, last time i did one they were held on by two long nuts and bolts. Nothing captive at all. The difficult bit can be the shock link, which can turn and turn if the rubber has parted company with the metal.

Just done mine. The lower link has a hex that you can apply an open ender to so none of them have captive nuts.

My last Anglia must have had conveniently rusted-in bolts, don’t remember having to find the other end of the bolt before!

Upper link separated with some persuasion from a screw-down joint separator. Offered up the replacement recon damper that I bought from the autojumble at last year’s AGM, labelled 105E, and it doesn’t fit! The arms bend the wrong way.

Buyer beware! (Or at least take your parts book with you when buying).

Could be that you have van/estate ones? I think they differ from saloon?

The club parts book has pics of them but they are wrong.

                They should be:
                The van arms are straight.
Saloon bend away from body of shock.
Estate bend towards body of shock.

Looks like I’ve got estate ones (and one of those is seized :( )
