Hi,I am trying to get a friends Estate going and I am having problems getting a spark!everything buzzes out ok,new points and he even bought a spare coil from a Cortina I think.I have connected the neg from the switch to the neg on the coil, the pos from the distributer to the + on the coil, set the gap to 25 thou, new condenser.no spark!the ht lead is ok…..also how can I find out where no 1 plug is on the cap…the old leads have been changed and new ones all same length,so don’t have a small lead to tell me where no 1 is.( can’t find mark on front for timing) All help greatly appreciated.

        Hi.
What is the make of distributor, if it is a Lucas 25D the points should be set at 15 thou not 25.
The timing mark is on dipstick side of the timing chain cover. it may be just two raised marks on the casting or a series of marks, with degrees next too them.
hope this helps perhaps the gurrues can add more.
There is post titled ford timing on here which may help.

To find number one firing stroke, you need to take the rocker cover off, rotate the engine till you see number 4 valves rocking then watch the timing mark on the pulley.

When you have TDC on the pulley & number 4 vales rocking you are ready to fire on number one. Set the dizzy to just open the points and wherever the rotor arm is pointing, that is number one. :)

It should then start but you will need to further tune the timing with a strobe light.
