I have a 997cc Anglia DeLuxe. It poodles along a 50mph quite happily and will reach 60 if pushed. When it gets to hills or inclines it starts too slow.
I have checked the compression on each cylinder and it ranges from 140 to 130 also the oil pressure when running is a steady 40psi.
My question is: should I consider a rebuild and if so would it make much difference.

People get it wrong about compression tests. The main issue is that all compressions are within ten percent of the highest, which is the case here. The figures are a bit down, but not enough to cause me concern.

Is the engine making knocking or rattling noises? Do oil fumes pump strongly from the oil filler with the cap off and engine idling? If no to both, I see little point in a rebuild.

Bear in mind that you have only 39 b.h.p. to play with so it won’t be any ball of fire. You might want to make sure the ignition timing is right (10 degrees btdc) as retarded timing will drastically reduce power output. But from what you say, a rebuild would be a lot of money for no real gain.

40psi oil pressure is fine too. Timing .. also failing of vacuum advance can rob you of full throttle power. even a split in the rubber pipe connectors

Yes, meant to mention the oil pressure!

Hi JAN , Oil Pressure…. How about only 30Psi at 40mph 32 Psi at 50 MPH when hot? ( 12 psi at tickover & a bit more rattly)

… The post above reminded me to actually look at the oil pressure gauge! Which for years used to read 37psi at 40/50mph hot or cold & 20psi at tick over… Is it normal for high mileage engines to drop off like that? & I have been out in the hot weather.. ( 2000 mile since last oil change, oil not clear, but not “5000 mile black” either).

Generally, there is enough spare capacity in the pump to cover some increased clearance as bearings wear. The first question I’d ask myself is, how accurate is the pressure gauge? It might be reading low, but 12 p.s.i. at tick over is good. The 40-50 mph figures are a bit low, but I wouldn’t worry at this point, just watch it to see if drops off further. Then you can worry!

Thanks JAN .. I’ve invested in a new full tank of fuel !! … I also changed the oil & filter, not much difference except tick over pressure perhaps 17 PSI, but today is cooler weather. ( the tick over is a little faster than a concourse engine).

What are Oil Filter options ,, I have the “spin on” Mk1 escort type ?

I used to use the Halfords C103 filter which was 91mm tall & cheap
This time Motor Parts Direct which is 87mm

I see Burton Power offer Efl500 https://www.burtonpower.com/ford-oil-filter-x-flow-cvh-lotus-twin-cam-bda-efl500.html which fits a host of cars .. But it is only 78mm tall.

Although size is not equal to quality , short isn’t an advantage.

Would a high performance oil filter give more flow? Any Recommendations ?

Do oil pumps wear out ? if so Any thoughts on what mileage to change oil pump on old engine ? Is there Spec for inspection for the Mk1 escort spin on type? Feeler gauge tolerances?

Unfortunately, I still can’t post images on here so I’ll try by explanation.

Yes, oil pumps do wear but there is no specified mileage for this; you change them when they fail.

The clearance between the lobe tip of the inner to outer rotors: not to exceed 0.006″. The clearance between the outer rotor and housing: not to exceed 0.075″ The clearance between a straight edge laid across the housing and to the rotors: not to exceed 0.005″.

Thanks JAN. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but your 50 words seem as clear as a picture.
