Hi.
I have taken on a restoration project on an Anglia and the person who was going to do the welding is not now available. I need someone to weld the following:
New outer sills.
1 new inner sill.
Rear crossmember & spring hanger repairs. (Not bad)
Patches to:
inner wings (nothing big)
Front and rear of sills need repairs.
Couple of patches to the front panel.I am perfectly able to do all the mechanical work (the engine is not fitted)
but I cannot weld.
The interior is completely stripped out and I have all the parts to do the job and 2 sheets of steel for making up bits.Coffee is excellent and I’ll pay well. I really want to save this car so someone please help me otherwise it’ll have to be scrapped.
Thanks for reading.
Tom.
June 7, 2010 at 12:28 pm #23702I think you’ll need to transport it to someone workshop for that to be done.
People tend to like working in their own enviroment rather than in someone elses, I certainly would if it were me.KMJ though a long way away in Exeter is very good at this sort of thing (advertises in club mag). I’ve sent you a PM about someone closer to you.
June 7, 2010 at 3:47 pm #23704KMJ are very reasonable and have repaired a lot of projects that many have considered ‘not worth doing’. I shipped a couple of my old wrecks to John and he has given them a new lease of life! You may find it worth your while loading the rolling shell on a trailer (they can be hired for about £50 a day) and leaving it with him – many people on this forum have had work done by him from all over the country. He does know Anglias very well!
June 7, 2010 at 3:53 pm #23705Hi Paddi, I’ve spoken to John and although he can do it he isn’t free until 2011 sadly.
*edit* I assume you mean John who does the parts?June 7, 2010 at 4:08 pm #23707No he means the KMJ john in Exeter who i mentioned in my second PM to you.
June 7, 2010 at 5:59 pm #23710Thanks Ken, it’s just too far to go though.
To enlarge a little:
Trailer £50 a day
Tow bar to fit Volvo S60=£450
Fuel for 750 miles=£120
accommodation for 2 £30 a night each?£770 or so before I pay the welder.
Can’t afford that I’m afraid.

Have to say you’ve took me a little literally there. If you already had one fitted then yes problem sorted. I wasn’t expecting you to go out and fit one. Perhaps a friend or other family member may have a car with one fitted. The other option if Exeter is too far by other transportation methods, is just to wait for John “spares”, or expand your search for another “local” restorer on other forums. Scrapping it this quickly seems a bit hasty.
June 8, 2010 at 6:02 pm #23723I know, it just looks a bit hopeless from here.
Debating on buying a gas mig and learning to weld, I used to own a garage in the 80’s but in those days I employed someone that could weld so never had to learn.
It would take time though but as I’m retired………….June 8, 2010 at 8:38 pm #23725That’s how I learned to weld! I bought a SIP Migmate 150 years ago as it was cheaper than paying a welder and was all I could afford. My initial work was crap but it was good enough for patching floors etc. That was 20 years ago and i’ve got a much more powerful welder now and the plates don’t fall off when I hit them with a hammer anymore! You’ll soon pick it up! And it’s good fun too. Just practice on some scrap first!
June 9, 2010 at 5:39 am #23728Tom, good advice from Paddi, and don’t scrap it, it’s too good for that and it will be another one lost forever.
June 9, 2010 at 4:17 pm #23730Is there a college near you that does night classes in welding? i did one a few years ago and really enjoyed it,never welded anything since though! Another option is asking a college thats does courses if they want a project car,you pay for materials and they do the work for you as experience for the students. I’m pretty sure the college here used to do that for folk. I’m on the Isle of Lewis though so here is no use to you.
